This is a live, in-person Law of Self Defense LEVEL 2 Class presented by Attorney Andrew Branca, being held in Lakewood CO on Sunday, October 15, 2017, from 9:00am to 1:00pm. This class is being graciously hosted by the Bristlecone Shooting, Training, & Retail Center.
LAWYERS: Email us at this address if you wish to attend this class for CLE credit.
Also, in order to keep costs as low as possible, we offer the option of registering for the class alone, without also having to purchase the optional class materials (presentation slides and book). For those of you who would prefer a single price for both the class and materials (slides & book), however, you can save 10% (about $20) by selecting the CLASS & MATERIALS option above. Note that the simulator module and CLE remain separate options, either way!
Alternatively, you can register for the class and either forgo the materials, or pay separately for whatever of the materials you prefer.
The Law of Self-Defense LEVEL 2 Class provides an in-depth and comprehensive legal education on the CO–specific case law (court decisions) governing self-defense, presented by a nationally recognized legal expert in the field. The classes are in-person and conducted by Attorney Andrew Branca.
The LEVEL 2 Class builds upon the Law of Self Defense LEVEL 1 Class, which is a mandatory pre-requisite (you can have taken a LEVEL 1 Class at any prior time, not necessarily the LEVEL 1 Class that immediately precedes this class. See below for information on waiving this requirement). The LEVEL 1 Class provides a full-day education on the general legal principles governing the lawful use of force in defense of self, others, and property, illustrated at a high level with the relevant statutes, jury instructions, and case law of the state in which the class is held. There is insufficient time in a single day, however, to cover all that material as well as to dive deeply into the self-defense court decisions for that state,.
That’s where the LEVEL 2 Class comes in.
In the LEVEL 2 Class we take selected use-of-force court decisions and examine them in detail. This is essential to fully understanding the actual law of self-defense in any state, because it is in the court decisions that “the rubber meets the road” and the law is truly defined. Statutory language is important to know, but statutes don’t have any power by themselves; they only have power when they are interpreted and applied by courts to real people in real self-defense cases. That happens in the court decisions we examine in the LEVEL 2 Class.
The LEVEL 2 Class is approximately four hours in duration and consists of the following modules:
Overview of the Appellate Courts in the Context of Use-of-Force Law
This module provides the student with an understanding of the self-defense court process, where these controlling court decisions take place, how cases get there, and how these courts arrive at their legal conclusions.
Five Principles of the Law of Self-Defense
This module provides a quick overview and refresher on the five elements of a self-defense claim, because it is these five elements that will ultimately determine the court’s decision. This brief review is intended to bring up to speed students who have already attended the full-day Law of Self Defense LEVEL 1 Class. It is not, however, sufficient for people who have not attended the LEVEL 1 Class. It is for this reason that the LEVEL 1 Class is a mandatory pre-requisite for the LEVEL 2 Class. (If you have reason to believe that you already possess a sufficient legal background on use-of-force law to have the LEVEL 1 Class requirement waived, please contact us at email@example.com. Note that such waivers are extremely rare, however.)
Appellate Case Law on Use-of-Force Justification
This module forms the bulk of the LEVEL 2 Class. Here we take a list of approximately 10 of the most important use-of-force court decisions in the relevant state, and break them down in detail. We examine the parties involved, what they did (and didn’t do), how the courts perceived the facts of the case, what legal arguments were made by the prosecution and defense, what law the appellate court applied to the case, and how they arrived at their final decision. We will examine both the majority decision as well as any dissenting decisions, where appropriate.
We often describe the LEVEL 1 Class as a law school-level education on use-of-force law, and we are routinely told by lawyers taking the class for Continuing Legal Education purposes that it is the best CLE class they have ever attended. In that context, the LEVEL 2 Class can be thought of as a graduate-level education above and beyond the LEVEL 1 Class.(Click here for information on our LEVEL 1 Class the prior day, Saturday, October 14, at the same location.)
Law of Self Defense Simulator Module
Law of Self Defense has partnered with Ti Simulations to bring you this unique opportunity, combining the advanced simulation technology of the Ti platform and the legal insight and analysis of Attorney Andrew Branca.
Students who elect this option will have the opportunity to run through self-defense scenarios on a laser-based shooting simulator. Each student will run through at least one scenario. Upon completion of the scenario, Attorney Andrew Branca will conduct a self-defense law debrief of the “defender’s” use-of-force decision-making. Every student will observe every other student’s run, so all of those participating will have the opportunity to learn from each other. The scenarios will be run for at least one hour, and students may be able to do multiple runs if time allows. (We don’t yet know how long each run will take per student, nor how many students may sign up for the option.)
The Law of Self Defense Simulator Module is an optional add on, and costs an additional $99.99 per student. Note: You MUST be a graduate of a prior LEVEL 1 Class in order to participate in the Law of Self Defense Simulator Module, as the legal debrief will be based upon the education received through the LEVEL 1 Class.
If you wish to participate in the optional Law of Self Defense Simulator Module you must pre-pay in the sidebar to the right. THERE ARE ONLY 12 SLOTS AVAILABLE FOR THE SIMULATOR MODULE. These will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis! Only those who have paid to enroll in the Simulator Module will be permitted to participate in OR OBSERVE this module. The Simulator Module runs immediately after the day’s LEVEL 2 Class, and should be wrapped up no later than 3pm.
Other LEVEL 2 Class Options
Once you’ve indicated your registration in the ticket form below, there are several additional options you may consider, each of which may also be selected in the ticket form at the bottom of this page.
OPTIONAL: Add presentation slides (+$29.99). You may pre-order a printed-and-bound copy of the >200 presentation slides (printed six-to-a-page), and have this provided to you at the start of the seminar. We strongly encourage this, as it facilitates note-taking, but it is not required. We do not bring extra copies to the seminar, so if you want a slide packet on site you must pre-order here. (NOTE: If you choose the CLASS & MATERIALS option above, the slides are included.)
OPTIONAL: Add autographed copy of “The Law of Self Defense, 3rd Edition” (2016) (+$24.99). Pre-ordering the book BY JUNE 8 to be delivered to you at the class saves you 25% off standard mail ordering. Autographs are provided on-site upon request. (NOTE: If you choose the CLASS & MATERIALS option above, the book is included.)
PRE-REGISTRATION and PRE-PAYMENT is REQUIRED for ALL classes. Classes routinely sell out. We do not guarantee a seat unless you have pre-registered and pre-paid. We DO often have to turn away people who simply show up without having pre-registered/paid. DON’T BE THAT GUY.
The class also allows for plenty of Q&A with Attorney Andrew Branca, an internationally recognized expert in American self-defense law. His legal practice, writings, and classes are considered an essential self-defense law resource by many judges, lawyers, and Federal and local law enforcement.
THIS IS AN EDUCATIONAL CLASS. THIS CLASS DOES NOT PROVIDE LEGAL ADVICE. IF YOU ARE IN NEED OF LEGAL ADVICE, CONSULT COMPETENT LEGAL COUNSEL IN THE RELEVANT JURISDICTION. ATTORNEY ANDREW BRANCA IS LICENSED TO PRACTICE LAW ONLY IN THE COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS.
RECORDING OF THIS CLASS IN ANY MANNER IS PROHIBITED.
